Local Attractions at the Old Head of Kinsale.

The Old Head of Kinsale is a beautiful, quiet and tranquil place. In itself it is amazing. What is also interesting is that so much is available to do and see nearby, so much being Looking down on the Old Head Lighthouse from the Old Head Golf Clubhouse.quietly pursued in such a still, beautiful location.

Golf: Well, what else can be said about the Old Head of Kinsale Golf course! It is world renowned as a golfing location par excellence. Many of the golfing greats have, and do, play there. Maybe you could meet a neighbour or friend there, maybe Tiger Woods.

Holiday Homes: Self catering holiday homes are available close to the beaches and the "Speckled Door" for short term lettings. There are also a nearby caravan park, with all facilities.

Places to See: You have reached West Cork when you have reached the Speckled Door. This means great places to see, great A warm fire awaits you on those cold days! views and great surprises reward a little searching. Beautiful little villages like Ballinspittle appear from nowhere. Historical gems like Timoleague whose living archaeology spans 5000 years, and equally renowned for it's Birdlife. Too much really to do and see - just try a little a day!

Beaches: You are really spoiled! Garrettstown and GaryLucas, both with a mile of each other and both Blue Flag beaches. Loved by wind-surfers, board-surfers and kiters. Loved too by those who like a stroll along empty beaches in the morning. Bass fishermen swear by the place, (a lot insome cases!).

Whale and Dolphin Watch: The Old Head has become aMecca for Whale and Dolphin watches. Bottlenose dolphin and porpoise are regularly seen in very large numbers. Seen too are Banking shark, Fin Whale, Blue whale and others. Not so visible are the cod and salmon - however, local fish are easily found in our restaurant and bar, and there's no waiting time!

Archaeology: Get you boots on! Lighthouses beacon, Castles echo to the battles won and lost, Monastic ruins whisper of lost times, ring forts tell of our early farmers while stone circles that predate Stonehenge offer few clues to their use. And that is within 10 miles.

Wrecks: Spare a though for the commercial importance of nearby Kinsale in the days of the Clipper ship. Remember too the tragic loss of the Lusitania, within 13 miles of the SThe sailing ship RONA, carrying mahogany & rum, hit rocks off Kinsale in 1893 and was lost. Wrecks, such as the steamers "California" and "Stonewall Jackson", wrecks like the 90 gun ship of the line HMS Stillorgan, litter the nearby coastline and beckons to curious divers. For the scuba enthusiast there is much to attract, but caution - the currents at the Old Head can be very strong - you will find much information and many artefacts in the bar on these matters.
